HOW TO DRIVE AN ELEPHANT

AS A mahout, or elephant motive force, cooked his supper by way of the aspect of the Narmada River, he left his tyke among the garage compartment and forefeet of his resting elephant. the kid again and again endeavoured to transport away, but "the supine elephant delicately twisted its trunk around the kid and stepped him lower back to in which his dad had dropped him," describes the e-book challenge Elephant. "The dad proceeded along with his cooking and seemed to have outright reality that the teenager was in safe guardianship."

work elephants were within the administration of man from as right on time as 2000 B.C.E. In antiquated activities, elephants had been organized by and large for preventing. In modern India, they're prepared to work. they are applied in the logging enterprise, at spiritual celebrations and weddings, in selling, in bazaars, and notwithstanding for asking. How are these elephants tamed? what is greater, how are they prepared?

A Course in Elephant Training

diverse focuses in India are organized to consider elephant calves that have been stuck, abandoned, or harmed in nature. One such academic hub is in Koni, within the territory of Kerala. here the calves are prepared to development in the direction of turning into paintings elephants. A mahout ought to initially win the believe of a calf. Bolstering is a big approach to fabricate this believe. A calf perceives its mahout's voice, and when known as for nourishing, it'll rush over to get its milk and millet glue. preparing for work does no longer usually arise until youthful elephants achieve their initial kids. At that factor, they're given some thing to do when they reap the age of 25. In Kerala, authorities requirements necessitate that running elephants be resigned at 65 years old.

To power an elephant securely, the mahout should have excellent getting ready. As indicated by way of the Elephant Welfare affiliation of Trichur, Kerala, another mahout desires serious preparing for at any charge 3 months. Such preparing isn't constrained to figuring out how to provide directions. It moreover covers elephant technology typical.

A grown-up elephant takes greater time to put together. From out of doors the fenced-in vicinity where the elephant is stored, the coach first shows his creature to recognize verbal directions. In Kerala, a mahout makes use of somewhere inside the range of 20 guidelines and sign to get his elephant to do the required work. The mahout gives clean and uproarious guidelines and, inside the meantime, nudges his elephant with a stick and demonstrates to it what to do. on the point when a direction complies, the elephant is compensated with a little deal with. on the point when the instruct is positive that his elephant is pleasant, he enters the fenced in location and touches it. This communique strengthens shared agree with. In time, the elephant may be taken outdoor—with an alert, manifestly, as despite the entirety it holds a part of its wild attributes. until it seems to be positive that the elephant is absolutely subdued, it's miles anchored among  mentor elephants when taken out for washing and for distinctive journeys.

After an elephant handles verbal instructions, the mahout sits on its again and shows it the way to react to physical instructions through goading it together with his toes or heels. To make the elephant push in advance, the mahout presses each of his huge ft in the back of the elephant's ears. To make it back up, he presses both of his heels into the creature's shoulders. To stay far from any perplexity, verbal instructions are given by means of best one mahout. An elephant will see each one of the guidelines inner 3 or 4 years. From that point, it always recollects them. notwithstanding the reality that an elephant has a thoughts this is little within the extent to its frame, it is a very clever creature.

Elephant Upkeep

An elephant need to be saved strong and in notable spirits. An regular shower is extensive. At shower time, the mahout makes use of stones and flawlessly sliced coconut husks to scour his charge's thick but sensitive and touchy pores and skin.

At that factor involves breakfast. The mahout readies a thick glue of wheat, millet, and pony gram, a kind of grub. The precept course consists of bamboo, palm leaves, and grass. The elephant is enchanted if crude carrots and sugar sticks are covered too. Elephants invest the extra part of their power ingesting. They want round three hundred pounds [140 kg] of sustenance and nearly 40 gallons [150 L] of water every day! to remain remarkable companions together with his pachyderm, the mahout desires to meet those requirements.

The outcomes of Abuse

The delicate Indian elephant cannot be driven or made to work beyond a particular point. Elephants can also turn on mahouts who dispense discipline, verbal or some thing else. India's Sunday herald paper pointed out one tusker—that is, a male elephant with tusks—that "went be[r]serk . . . following sick treatment by using the mahouts. The elephant which became responding to the outsmarting allocated by means of the mahout went out of manage . . . what's more, ought to be sedated." In April 2007, India nowadays worldwide precise: "within the preceding two months alone, in extra of 10 tuskers have run wild at celebrations; considering the fact that January a year ago, 48 mahouts have been killed by way of the seething mammoths." Such suggests often take place amid the period referred to as musth. that is a every year physiological wonder associated with the mating season, amid which the testosterone dimension of strong grown-up male elephants rises. The final results is forceful and unpredictable conduct closer to other bull elephants and people. Musth can final from 15 days to a quarter of a 12 months.

Every other condition in which an elephant can get unsettled is the factor at which it's far sold and every other mahout dominates. Its connection to the antique mahout is apparent. To impact clean progress, the beyond mahout greater frequently than no longer makes a trip with it to its new home. There, the 2 handlers cooperate till the upgraded one will become acclimated to the mind-units of the elephant. on the factor whilst a mahout bites the dust and another one assumes manipulate over, issues may be significantly extra distinguished. Be that as it can, the elephant, in the long run, comes to understand and acknowledge the new circumstance.

Notwithstanding the reality that some humans can also fear this effective land creature, a nicely-prepared elephant will observe a benevolent ace. on the factor while benevolence policies, the elephant want not be affixed when his mahout is by the way missing. The mahout ought to without a doubt placed one give up of his stick at the elephant's foot and the alternative cease on the ground and ask the creature now not to move. The elephant loyally stops with the stick set up. As represented inside the presentation, the participation between an elephant and its mahout may be each astounding and contacting. without a doubt, a first rate driving force can open up to his elephants.

MAN AND ELEPHANT—a long history

Man's taming of elephants has a long records. maybe the maximum popular precedent in historical history is that of Hannibal, a Carthaginian popular. in the 0.33 century B.C.E., the North African town of Carthage became scuffling with Rome in a century-long association of fights known as the Punic Wars. Hannibal collected a military in the metropolis of Cartagena, Spain, with the association of on foot on Rome. He previously crossed the Pyrenees to go into what is presently France. At that factor, in what Archeology magazine phrases "one of the boldest navy actions ever," his navy of 25,000 men—joined by using 37 African elephants and ratings of % creatures stacked with provisions—crossed the Alps into Italy. They had to fight with cold, snowstorms, rockslides, and unfriendly mountain clans. That venture changed into amazingly strenuous for the elephants. now not considered one of them endures Hannibal's first year in Italy.

THE ROMANS AND ARCHIMEDES

It is able to wonder you to know that the well-known Greek mathematician, Archimedes, was technically Italian. He was born in Sicily and died there. But, in the third century BC, the vicinity where he lived turned into called Magna Graecia, and the town he lived in, Syracuse, became a Greek colony. He became ethnically and culturally Greek.

Among different matters, Archimedes turned into an excellent scientist who conceived many incredible innovations, inclusive of pulleys and the Archimedes' screw pump. he is taken into consideration to be not best the best of the historical mathematicians but also one of the finest of all instances. His mathematical theories have been extremely influential within the Renaissance.

As cited in earlier statistics, Sicily turned into the front line of fighting among Carthage and Rome; and Syracuse, although part of neither empire, got drawn into these conflicts. …which were going on while Archimedes became an antique man, his reputation as a genius already sealed.

The town of Syracuse became, for its time, large and very well defended, specially from the ocean. The Romans started their siege in 214 BC when their fleet brought a floating siege tower and ships with pre-erected scaling ladders, which have been repelled by way of the wall-installed catapults and fireplace arrows hurled through the populace. Archimedes, as a devoted citizen of Syracuse, became asked to place his remarkable intellect toward assisting with the defenses. To this give up he invented a large crane and claw that turned into mounted on the walls and will damage down onto the attacking Roman galleys, hurling them upside down.  hundreds drowned due to this invention.

There may be a later story of Archimedes inventing a weapon composed of metal mirrors that angled the mild to create a warmness beam.  since cutting-edge science has failed to recreate this device, it's miles probable that the tale is a myth, but it's far a testomony to his popularity that Archimedes is meant to have created this magic weapon.

The siege of Syracuse dragged on for two years, and Roman casualties have been excessive. This brought about the people of the metropolis becoming over-assured, and they permit their shield down all through a banquet to the goddess Artemis. while the Romans found this, a small band of troops scaled the partitions and allow the army in.

As all hell broke free, the Roman infantrymen have been ordered to locate Archimedes and produce him to their wellknown - alive. in the end, this guy became a genius who had created powerful warfare machines, simply the sort of guy the Romans needed to combat Carthage.

When a Roman soldier observed Archimedes, he turned into deep in idea. The soldier demanded that Archimedes include him, however he changed into totally absorbed in a thorny mathematical difficulty and overlooked the soldier. The Legionnaire was so frustrated at being left out by way of the vintage man that he stabbed him along with his spear, killing one of the greatest minds that ever lived - in mid-concept.

The Romans may have received Syracuse, but they lost Archimedes

Transfer: Pogba’s move to Real Madrid in danger with Mourinho set to replace Zidane

Jose Mourinho is set for a shock return to Real Madrid, leaving Paul Pogba’s wish to join the LaLiga giants up in the air, according to El Pais.
Madrid president Florentino Perez and head coach Zinedine Zidane remain at odds over the failure to sign Pogba.

And with pressure rising on Zidane, an early-season return to the Santiago Bernabeu for Mourinho could be in the offing.
Early in the summer, Perez wanted to sign Christian Eriksen from Spurs, but Zidane made clear he didn’t want the Danish midfielder.
The Real president has never sold over paying huge money and wages for Pogba, a situation that led the player’s agent, Mino Raiola, into attempting to engineer a return to Juventus.
With the new season fast approaching, and pre-season having been far from smooth sailing for Madrid – notably losing 7-3 to Atletico during the club’s US tour – Zidane is now finding himself under increasing pressure.
The Gareth Bale issue has further clouded his situation at the club, with Zidane keen to get rid of the Welshman, only for Perez to block a switch to China.
Mourinho has been out of job since he was sacked at Old Trafford in December, after falling out with a number of players at United including Pogba.

Mbappe magic as PSG beat Rennes to claim Champions Trophy

Kylian Mbappe provided the moments of magic as Paris Saint-Germain collected their first silverware of the new season with a 2-1 French Champions Trophy victory over Rennes in Shenzhen Saturday.
PSG’s German boss Thomas Tuchel looked relieved more than delighted afterwards, given his side were behind at half-time. “There’s fatigue for everyone,” said Tuchel, pointing to the steamy conditions in the southern Chinese city and the fact the game came at the end of a long road trip.
“We have had a lot of reorganisation with new players but we still played very well. The win is a good reward for us. We had about 10 shots that somehow didn’t go in. But we found gaps and we turned it into a good performance. It was a good opening for us for the new season.”

In was revenge, of sorts, for PSG after a loss on penalties to the same club in the French Cup back in April.
PSG went on to win the French title their sixth in seven years — but the Qatar-owned side have made no secret that their eyes are the Champions League this season.
That’s still a long a long way off but there were positive signs as the French season officially kicked off inside Shenzhen Universiade Sports Centre Stadium.
The 25,000-odd gathered on a steamy night had eyes -– and hearts –- only for Mbappe, screaming at the French World Cup-winner’s every move.
The 20-year-old superstar duly rose to the fanfare in the second half as PSG came back from 1-0 at the break to seal the trophy.
Spotlight on Mbappe
After threatening with some mazy runs throughout the first half, Mbappe finally found himself front and centre as the ball caromed around the box on 57 minutes. It finally fell at his feet just a few yards out, and Mbappe made no mistake.
Emboldened, PSG started dominating play with Argentine forward Angel Di Maria, in particular, giving the Rennes defence the run around.
His hard work paid off on 73 minutes when he fired in a free kick that caught Rennes keeper Tomas Koubek napping.
It was some effort but the night belonged to Mbappe and the Chinese fans wouldn’t let anyone think otherwise.
For his part Tuchel was at pains to share the glory, singling out also defender Abdou Diallo, Di Maria and skipper for the night Marquinhos for special mention.
“Diallo just kept attacking,” said the German.
“He’s a very important player for us and he brings other players into the game. Di Maria came into the game when it was at a dangerous time for us and he delivered. Marquinhos showed his quality and he was perfect. He can control the whole field.”
With injured Brazilian star Neymar serving a three-match ban, Mbappe had the spotlight to himself in what must be ominous signs for defences in France and beyond as the youngster said pre-match he wanted more than the 33 goals he scored last season.

There were plenty of half-chances early on before PSG defender Thilo Kehrer rattled the crossbar with a towering header in what was the match’s first real threat on goal,
It seemed to spark Rennes into life and on 13 minutes striker Adrian Hunou ghosted past his marker and into the box. Replays showed he was a touch off-side, maybe, and with a deft flick of his left foot he guided the ball by the flapping Alphonse Areola.
It had given the underdogs some hope at the break. But then came Mbappe, and now PSG turn their attention to their opening domestic encounter against Nimes on August 12, and to a season that promises plenty.
“We are still working on creating our own style but this has been a good step to take,” said Tuchel.

Shock As Presidency Uncovers Drug Cartels In The Nigerian Military And Police By Mod - 2019-08-03 17:32:05 - [ News ]

For a long time, the use of hard drugs by personnel of the Nigerian armed forces has been a subject of speculations, even in clear cases of disturbing patterns of behaviours–such as the inexplicable cases of soldiers who killed colleagues and superior officers and ended up killing themselves.
According to one popular speculation, when posted to operational areas, some military personnel car- ry along with them a huge supply of hard drugs that would last them for some time. The most damning of the speculations claim such illicit substances are sourced right in their barracks across the country.
All these claims were in the realm of speculation until recently when a memo from the Office of the Na- tional Security Adviser (NSA), Major Gen. Babagana Monguno (retd) dated June, 10, 2019, addressed to both the Chief of Defence Staff, General Gabriel Olonisakin and the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant-General Tukur Buratai, explicitly directed military authorities to rid the barracks of the problem which it says portrays the services in bad light.
In the letter titled “Sales of Cannabis and other Psychoactive Drugs in Military and Police Barracks in Nigeria”, the NSA specifically warned that if nothing was done urgently to address the situation, it may have an adverse effect on the health and operations effectiveness of personnel and urged the service chiefs to employ intelligence and provost to rid the barracks of these hard substances.
That memo put to rest the question about whether or not trade and traffic in hard drugs exist across the military barracks. The development raised some pertinent questions: What is the nature or magnitude of the drug malaise in military barracks? How is the supply pipeline structured? Who are the peddlers?
These and other questions were the focus of a Saturday Sun investigation conducted across the barracks in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The major findings indicate that hard drugs are not only sold in the barracks, but the peddlers are also members of the service who conduct their illicit trade, in most cases with impunity, from their residential quarters in the barracks. Their modus operandi includes operating a beer joint as a front where the innocuous business of beer and pepper soup acts as a camouflage for the brisk sales of drugs as the case may be.
Findings by Saturday Sun pin- pointed major supply centres for hard drugs, namely the FCT Polo ground, CBA Quarters (near the river), OVA (around the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA)), Shehu Musa Yar’adua barracks and the Lungi barracks.
The polo ground, located along Kubwa expressway, is the ‘depot’ from where drugs flow into all the military barracks. Aside from supplying the barracks community, the polo ground drug enterprise also serves members of the public who come in their large numbers to pick their stuff. Patrons of this illicit drugs market include foreigners, top government functionaries, offspring of well-to-do parents, security agents and wayward students amongst others.
The reporter conducted a reconnaissance of the polo ground and discovered a mushroom of shanties and makeshift accommodation that provide cover for shady transactions. Different kinds of businesses take place, sustained by a steady stream of people that troop in from every nook and cranny of the city. During weekdays, business on the ground is at its peak between 4 pm and 6 pm. At the weekend, the polo ground is a beehive and its business goes on seamlessly for 24 hours.
A very reliable source who re- sides in one of the barracks avowed that most dealers bring in their products from outside Abuja to the polo ground.

“This polo ground is the headquarters where barracks in Abuja get their drugs because they sell all manner of drugs here, people come from every place, including white men, to buy drugs here,” the source asserted.
“There is no kind of drug you will not find here. This has been going on for years and I don’t think it can be stopped now; even if you report to the Chief of Army Staff, he cannot do anything because the kind of people that come here can remove him from his job if he tries to fight them.”
Another source claimed the au- thorities are aware of the going-on on the polo ground. He said: “The most annoying aspect of this is the way our young boys and girls have taken to hard drugs, especially students. If you come here during school hours, especially when they are on break or at closing time, you will see for yourself what these youths have turned themselves into because of drugs. They are not poor people’s children. They are from very rich homes because some of them come with big cars and they mingle with soldiers to take drugs. If you come here on weekends, you will see how they bring very expensive things in exchange for drugs.” Majority of the customers are “soldiers, children of Generals and other big men in Abuja,” he asserted.
At the Nigerian Air Force Base, located along the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Road, Sat- urday Sun found a booming il- licit substance racket. There is a catch, however: peddlers sell only to known customers. An attempt by the reporter to purchase some proved abortive until she went through a regular member who pur- chased it with ease. Strangely, those who sell these drugs are not strang- ers, but personnel of the service and are well known.
Sources in the barracks affirmed that these “barons” are above the law because those who should ar- rest them also patronize them.
At Mambilla barracks, formally known as Gowon barracks, transac- tions in hard drugs within and outside the perimeter of the barracks went on unhindered. Alarmingly, the peddlers are patronized not only by soldiers but also by school chil- dren. The peak hour for the drug business is between 4 pm and 6:30 pm, Saturday Sun gathered. Some of the peddlers use their accommodation as their shops. This is a stark contrast to the situation at Lungi barracks, where personnel who engage in the business do so discreetly.
At Mogadishu Cantonment, also known as Abacha barracks, which is home to personnel of the Nigerian Army, Navy and Air Force, the racket is in full bloom, operated like a family venture whereby service personnel and their children and relatives are actively involved. In the absence of their parents, children and relatives attend to customers. However, because they have been trained, they sell only to known customers, and most times, they sell to strangers only after they get a call from their parents.
A source confided: “These wards, some of whom are students, have become expert in the business as they sometimes sell above the usual price and pocket the extra profit for their personal use.” The consequence, he lamented, has come home to roost. “Now, the barrack is filled with youths who have become addicted to drugs and engage in theft; they break into people’s home and cart away generating sets, mobile telephones, electronic gadgets, motorcycles and other valuables when such persons have gone for duty.”
He continued: “Because the use of burglary proof is not allowed in the barracks, they get easy access into apartments by tearing the window net. Several cases of theft have been reported to both the intelligence unit and the military police, but they have not been able to curb the menace, which in recent months have become rampant.”
At Navy barracks, Kpegi, located after Kuje, Saturday Sun spoke with some naval personnel, all of whom confirmed the existence of drugs business in the barrack. One of the respondents attested that users usually procure their ration from dealers in the neighbouring village whenever the barrack supply runs out.
A naval rating who preferred to be anonymous said: “I don’t take hard drugs but my friends who take it say it makes them strong and I used to see it because they can work from morning till night and don’t get tired.”
The irony of the hard drug racket is glaring at Garki Police barrack. The operators of the racket are policemen, the supposed epitome of the law; they sell not only to their colleagues but also to customers from outside the barracks, a situation that encourages a steady trickle of non-police customers into the barrack from various parts of the FCT. What was worse, the drugs, Saturday Sun learnt, are most often confiscated from peddlers during police raids.
Unlike the military barracks where drug transactions thrive at particular hours of the day, the racket is a 24/7 com- merce in police barracks.
“All you need to do if you need it in the middle of the night, is place a call or better still knock on the door of the dealer and you get your package,” a source claimed.
At MD Abubakar Police barracks, located at Dei-Dei, purveyors of narcotics and other controlled or banned sub- stances carry on their trade openly. Residents who spoke with Saturday Sun vented their frustra- tion at a vice that has grown to become a Frankenstein to the barrack.

“We have made several reports to the provost which had not yielded any result, so we stopped complaining,”
 said a po- lice Inspector.
Another police officer corroborated this position: “Selling of hard drugs here in our barracks is not a new thing. It has been here a long time and the sellers operate without fear. They boast that nothing will happen, and truly nothing will happen, because we have complained and nothing really happened. These people have a way of settling those in authority who are supposed to stop them from this bad business.”
Another source who also does not want to be mentioned, said: “We are tired of complaining. The vice is beginning to affect some of our children, some of them are now into drugs.” He added: “These teenagers steal money and other valuables just to go and buy drugs. As a result, some families are beginning to send their grown-up children, both boys and girls, to live with their relatives out- side the barracks so they won’t join their mates to take drugs”.
As it is in the military barracks, the peddlers in Police barracks operate beer/pepper soup joints from their apartment.
Saturday Sun contacted the Defence Headquarters on its actions to tackle the menace. The Director, Defence Information, Colonel Onyema Nwa- chuku said: “Though I am not privy to the memo reportedly raised by the office of the NSA, I must state without ambiguity that psychoactive drugs are outrightly banned in our military cantonments and barracks. No individual or group of persons is allowed to ingest, use, peddle or trade in such highly controlled sub- stances within military premises. Possession of hard drugs is illegitimate and anyone caught in pos- session of such drugs is promptly apprehended and handed over to the appropriate regulatory agency for prosecution. We positively engage our youth and personnel in the barracks with training exercises and empowerment programmes as well as sports to keep away from such indulgence”.
When contacted, Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Colonel Saghir Musa said: “I cannot comment on this, please bear with me.”
Contacted via Whatsapp chat, the director of Naval Information simply responded thus: “Who is this please?” The director of Public Relations and Information of the Nigerian Air Force did not respond.
Police Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, promised to comment on the matter. He was yet to respond at the time of filing this report.

Police blow hot over planned Revolution Now protest, say it’s act of terrorism, treasonable felony

The Nigeria Police on Saturday warned Nigerians against joining the planned protest, ‘RevolutionNow, which is aimed to “force a regime change in the country” on August 5th.
The force In a statement by its PRO, Frank Mba, described the protest ‘as ‘treasonable felony and acts of terrorism.

It, however, warned the organizers, sponsors, allies, supporters, associates and sympathisers of the group ‘Global Coalition for Security and Democracy in Nigeria’ to steer clear of the planned protest and demonstration.
The statement reads, “The attention of the Nigeria Police Force has been drawn to a video circulating on the social media by the ‘Global Coalition for Security and Democracy in Nigeria and others’, inciting Nigerians, home and abroad to join a planned ‘revolution’ march against the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on Monday, 5th August, 2019 with the sole aim of forcing a regime change in the country.
“The Force wishes to state unequivocally that the call amounts to treasonable felony and acts of terrorism and will therefore not stand idly-by and watch any individual or group in the society cause anarchy in the land.
“While acknowledging the rights of Nigerians to embark on protest, the Force wishes to note that such rights should not translate to a violent and forceful change of government which clearly is the meaning of ‘revolution’.
“Needless to state that Nigeria is a democratic republic and has well-defined processes for change of government, exercised periodically during various cycle of elections.
“The Force therefore warns the organizers, sponsors, allies, supporters, associates and sympathisers of the group ‘Global Coalition for Security and Democracy in Nigeria’ to, in their own interest, steer clear of any such planned
protest, demonstration, acts of incitement and proposed “revolution”, as the full wrath of the law will be brought to bear on any individual or group engaged or found participating in the above planned criminal act.
“Parents and Guardians are therefore enjoined to impress on their children and wards not to allow themselves to be used in whatever form by any person or group of persons to cause breach of law and order in the country.
“The Police will work with other Law Enforcement Agencies and positive minded Nigerians to protect, defend and secure our public peace and space.”

Trump invited Iran FM to White House

US President Donald Trump invited Iran’s foreign minister to the White House last month at the height of tensions between the two countries, a magazine reports.
The invitation, extended by Senator Rand Paul with permission from the president, was turned down for now, The New Yorker reported Friday. The minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, said it was up to Tehran to decide on accepting it.
Neither the White House nor the State Department responded to AFP requests for comment on the report, which quoted US and Iranian sources and what the magazine called a well-placed diplomat.
Zarif told the magazine he would not want a White House meeting that yielded just a photo op and a two page statement afterward, The New Yorker said.
Trump has said publicly several times that he is willing to hold talks with the Iranians even as he lambasts Tehran as a corrupt, incompetent and dangerous regime that is a threat to regional security and US interests.
Last year Trump pulled the US out of an international accord designed to curb Iran’s nuclear program, and has reimposed sanctions on Iran — and even slapped them on Zarif this week — in an effort to force it to renegotiate the agreement.
Rand had been working for weeks on setting up a meeting with Zarif and on July 15, conferred with him in New York, passing on an invitation from Trump for him to come to the White House, the magazine said.
At the one hour meeting with Rand, Zarif suggested ways to end the nuclear impasse and address Trump’s concerns, The New Yorker said.
Tensions soared in the Gulf in June and July amid attacks on oil tankers, Iran’s downing of an unmanned US surveillance drone and after the US said it had downed an Iranian drone.
Trump has said the attack against the US drone prompted him to order a military strike in response, only to call it off at the last minute.

Transfer: Dybala agent threatens to wreck move to Man Utd

Manchester United have been left “disgusted” by the request of Paulo Dybala’s agent, Jorge Antun, for a huge personal cut in the region of £13.7m, according to the UK Sun.
The Red Devils are very keen to bring the Juventus forward to Old Trafford this summer.
However, the deal might be on the brink of collapse, with Antun’s demands.
United chiefs have been meeting with Juventus officials in London since Thursday, in a race to complete the deal before next week’s deadline.
The majority of terms are thought to be agreed, including Romelu Lukaku’s switch to the Serie A club in exchange.
However, the Dybala end is still uncertain, with the player also concerned about the lack of Champions League football.

The Cossy Orjiakor, Tunde Moshood, Halima Abubakar social media war

The movie “Itohan” was shot in 2002 and uploaded on YouTube in 2009 after the magazine, Enquirer owned by Tunde Moshood made a publication about Cossy Ojiakor having sex with a dog just about the time the movie was being shot.

It was 17 years ago and all the drama associated with the saga appeared to have been rested for good until Cossy opened the old wounds again in an Instagram post on her page two weeks ago.

It all started with a picture post by Uche Ogbodo on Instagram, showing Halima Abubakar and three other actresses. Cossy had reacted to the picture, calling Halima a snake that betrayed her. She then went ahead to paint the picture of how Halima Abubakar leaked the pictures from the movie “Itohan” to Tunde Moshood, publisher of the then Enquirer, whom she also described as Halima’s boyfriend.

“ We were room mates at the time and she had access to my things. I got a picture from the location camera guy on some of the scenes from the film. Halima stole the pictures and gave his boyfriend who twisted the story to sell his magazine,” she said in a private chat with Potpourri.
Cossy said she had never recovered from the stigma the story and pictures brought her and released comments after comments concerning complicity  of Halima and Tunde and how they tried to ruin her. At some point, Cossy mentioned Tunde Moshood’s daughter and the latter got infuriated that he replied Cossy with an Instagram post of the video showing Cossy and a dog in bed while some white men watched. But from the video, there was nothing to show that the dog had sex with the actress.

However, Tunde Moshood backed the video with caustic comment directed at Cossy.
He said, “It’s been 10 years since we ran the sex with dog story of Nigeria’s No 1 porn star, Cossy Orjiakor. Good for her then, it wasn’t an internet era, so the story was good as being stale before she pulled her luck too far.

Ordinarily, I would have kept mute with all the name callings but having to drag my innocent daughter was going to the crescendo. The trouble with most of us is that we would rather be ruined by praise than be saved by criticism. Those pushing you won’t be able to help you by the time I finish with you. This story has come and gone but he who the gods will kill, they first make mad.

Sticking to good habits can be hard work, and mistakes are part of the process. Don’t declare failure simply because you messed up or because you are having trouble reaching your goals. Instead use your mistakes as opportunities to grow stronger and become better. Now, Cossy Orjiakor, this challenge is for you.”
However, Halima Abubakar has kept quiet about it all. Chico Ejiro, who was the director of the movie has kept mute also and declined to speak when approached by Potpourri.

Breaking: Those who kidnapped me are herdsmen – RCCG pastor

The female pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG who was recently kidnapped at Ijebu Ode and has regained her freedom has said that those who kidnapped her are Fulani herdsmen.

The Deaconess from Abia State, RCCG Provine 3 Mrs Ibelegbo Chidinma who testified at the Redemption Camp during the ongoing Ministers Conference on Saturday night revealed that those who kidnapped her were Fulani herdsmen.
In her testimony, Mrs Ibelegbo Chidinma said she prayed that God should allow her captors to fall asleep after which she sneaked out of the kidnappers’ den.

Miyetti Allah defends Fulani herdsmen over murder of Enugu Catholic priest

The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), has said that Fulani herdsmen were not responsible for the killing of the Catholic priest of St James the Greater Parish, Ugbawka, Enugu State on Thursday.
The group said it was part of security and peace committee in Enugu State, hence, it was bound to control its members and ensures that criminals do not infiltrate its members conducting their business of cow rearing.
Chairman of MACBAN in South East, Alhaji Giddado Siddiki, in a statement on Saturday said: “Again, our hearts bleed over the most dastardly murder of a Catholic priest, Reverend Father Paul Offu, of the Catholic Diocese of Enugu.
“This is one murder too many! It is most condemnable and heartily regretted.
“Again, our society aches as a result of the activities of criminals who care less about the value of human life. It is painful that the security apparatuses of the government have not been able to contain the excesses of these men of the underworld who have continued to diminish the value of life in our society.
“We hereby most heartily condole the members of the Catholic Diocese of Enugu, and all the Christian faithful on this very painful and irreparable loss.
“We once more call on the government to rise to the occasion and provide adequate security for the citizens of Nigeria across the length and breadth of the country.
“We maintain that crime, in whatever form of its perpetration, is anti-society. Criminals of any guise cause pains to society and should therefore be properly identified and made to face the full wrath of the law.
“While we mourn the sudden departure of Father Offu, we are very hopeful that this occasion will agitate the government sufficiently to respond to the challenge of criminality amongst us.
“Please let all of us be duly consoled. May God receive the soul of His dutiful servant in Paradise
